In 1991, Founder and Executive Director Mrs. Veronique Michelot went to Haiti and visited the pediatric ward at the General Hospital in Port-au-Prince.  As a native of Haiti she was familiar with the deprivation of it’s people, but that knowledge was not enough to prepare her for what she saw that day.  She left the hospital in tears and was determined to make a positive contribution to the lives of Haiti’s children.  From her tears Helping Hands Across the Ocean was born.

For close to two decades Veronique has taken on this mission on her own, but now HHAO, is a registered 501(c)3 with a mission to contribute to the human dignity of the Haitian people through the development of Haiti’s children, has provided financial support, food, books, and medical supplies to help the children of Haiti.  HHAO believes the future of any society starts with its children and that future must be built on a strong foundation of educational opportunity.  HHAO helps to lay that foundation for achievement by providing access to the essential tools needed to succeed for elementary school-age students in the areas of Bercy and Jacmel, Haiti.  We collaborate with local educators and work directly with community organizations that share our commitment to improving opportunities for underserved students of Haiti.  We provide funding directly to those organizations, and do not fund NGO’s or the Haitian Government.
